Category: Serial Killing
Location: Spokane, Washington
Date: 1975 - 1998
Crime: Over a two year period between 1996 and 1998, Yates murdered at least 13 prostitutes in Spokane's 'Skid Row' red-light district. He is currently on death row at the Washington State Penitentiary.
Biography: Born in May, 1952, Yates was raised in a middle-class family in Oak Harbor, Washington. When he was six, he was apparently sodomized repeatedly by an older neighborhood boy. He graduated from High School and took a short-lived job with the Department of Corrections. He was married and fathered four daughters. He eventually enlisted in the military and became a pilot, earning multiple awards and medals over his 19-year Armed Forces career. It is still not known, what ultimately caused Yates to shoot the prostitutes that he had paid for sex. His public life was that of a military hero, husband and father. Many of the killings occurred in a van that he had equipped with a bed in the back. It is said that he had sex with the victims in the van before shooting them and in some cases, continued to have sex with the dead victims for several days afterward. He avoided the death sentence by admitting to two murders that he committed in 1975, pleading for life imprisonment.
