Biography: Tian Mingjian was a 31-year old, First Lieutenant who committed one of the most famous violent crimes in modern Chinese history. The events leading up to the rampage give us a window into the killer's motive. Reports indicate that Tian snapped after his wife, who was pregnant with their second child, died during an abortion procedure. Apparently, Tian's superior officer suggested that his wife have the procedure in keeping with China's 'One-child' policy. The night before the attack, Tian was involved in a bitter dispute with a fellow officer, until he was supposedly calmed down by the battalion commander. The following morning, Tian shot and killed both officers, gunned down others on the base and then headed into Beijing, firing rounds along the way. He stopped once he got to Tiananmen Square and began shooting people in the head until the sniper's caught up to him and got a clean shot at him.
