Category: Spree Killing
Location: San Ysidro, California
Date: July 18, 1984
Crime: Walked into a McDonald's armed with an Uzi, a Browning Hi-Power and pump action shot gun and proceeded to slaughter twenty-one people and injure nineteen others before a SWAT team sniper was able to take him out.
Biography: Born in Canton, Ohio on October 11, 1942, Huberty contracted polio at the age of three and ended up with a permanent walking disability. His mother abandoned the family when Huberty was around ten years of age. He never recovered from her abandonment and ended up sullen and withdrawn. Huberty graduated from college and was married, eventually fathering two children. His married life was marred with a history of violent behavior, and not all of it was precipitated by him. His wife was once arrested for threatening another mother with a 9mm pistol, before they packed up the family and moved to California. Two weeks prior to the spree, Huberty was dismissed from his job as a security guard, and on the day of the killing, he actually phoned the local mental health clinic, but his call was never returned. He left his house armed to the hilt, and when his wife asked him where he was going, he simply stated, 'I'm going to hunt humans'. She never warned the police. Witnesses state that Huberty first headed towards the post office, but then changed direction and went into the McDonalds and opened fire.
